Application of composite membranes in civil engineering

Composite geomembranes are widely used in civil engineering. Their versatility, durability and efficiency make them a key material for solving a variety of engineering problems.

Composite Geomembrane

Ⅰ.Seepage prevention and waterproofing engineering

1. Water conservancy engineering:

It is used as an anti-seepage layer for structures such as reservoirs, channels, artificial lakes, and dams to prevent structural damage or water resource loss caused by water penetration. HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and PVC composite geomembranes are commonly used.

It is used as an isolation layer in sewage treatment tanks and sedimentation tanks to prevent sewage leakage from polluting groundwater.

2. Landfill:

Composite geomembranes are used as bottom linings and top covering layers to prevent leachate from polluting soil and groundwater. The "geomembrane + geotextile" composite structure is often used to take into account both seepage prevention and drainage.

3. The waterproof layer of structures such as tunnels, basements, and subways prevents groundwater penetration from causing structural corrosion or leakage.

Ⅱ.Foundation and roadbed treatment

1. Soft soil foundation reinforcement:

Composite geomembranes (such as geogrids + geomembranes) are used for layered isolation and reinforcement of soft soil foundations, improving foundation bearing capacity and reducing uneven settlement.

2. Road engineering:

As an isolation layer between the roadbed and the base layer, it prevents fine-grained soil from mixing with gravel, and prevents capillary water from rising and damaging the road surface structure.

In frozen areas, composite membranes can reduce the damage to the roadbed caused by freeze-thaw cycles.

Ⅲ.Environmental and ecological engineering

1. Artificial wetlands:

Composite geomembranes are used to prevent seepage at the bottom of wetlands, while allowing plant roots to penetrate the surface geotextile to achieve a combination of ecology and engineering.

2. Saline-alkali land improvement:

Laying composite geomembranes isolates salt migration and cooperates with drainage systems to reduce soil salinization.

3. Slope ecological protection:

Composite geomembranes are combined with vegetation to prevent slope erosion and promote plant growth (such as three-dimensional vegetation net composite membranes).
